Scots fans rush for tickets as Mamma Mia! arrives in Glasgow

Apr 2 2008 By Rick Fulton Showbiz Editor

SCOTTISH pop fans have gone mad for the Abba musical Mamma Mia!
More than 75,000 tickets have already been sold for the show's month-long run, which started in Glasgow last night.
The tour is also special for the show's star, 27-year-old Haley Flaherty from Falkirk, Stirlingshire.
She said: "It's fantastic to be back home in Scotland.
"We are going all around the world including Greece where the musical is set and Sweden where Abba are from, but for me Scotland is a huge deal.
"It means my family can come and see me and I'm hoping we can bring some Greek sunshine to rainy Scotland."
It was 28 years ago when Abba put Glasgow on the musical map in the song Super Trouper.
And over the next month, nearly 96,000 Scots fans will flock to the city's Clyde Auditorium.
All Abba's greatest hits, like Dancing Queen, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, Knowing Me, Knowing You and Take A Chance OnMe, are in the show.
But Super Trouper and the line "I was sick and tired of everything/ When I called you last night from Glasgow" will get a special cheer.
Mamma Mia! has been to Edinburgh twice - but Glasgow has a special affection for Abba fans because of the 1980 lyric.
The show has already been seen by 30million people and made over £1billion at the box office. And from now until April 27, 3000 Scots a night will add to the statistics.
Local girl Haley plays Sophie Sheridan, a bride-to-be who wants to find out who her dad is so he can walk her down the aisle.
The actress, who has also starred in Grease and Chicago, is given a spray tan every week to look bronzed enough for the part.
Haley was joined by other Mamma Mia! cast members for a special run-through of the show hours before last night's opening performance.
The stars include CarolanneWeidle - who plays Sophie's mum Donna Sheridan - Felicity Duncan as Rosie, Anita Booth as Tanya, Cameron Blakely as Sam Carmichael and Jon Hawkins as Sky.
The musical is set on the eve of Sophie's wedding when she finds out her dad could be one of three men.
They return to the Greek island paradise they last visited 20 years ago to find out which one will walk Sophie down the aisle.
There are currently more productions of Mamma Mia! playing around the world than any other musical.
A total of 11 shows are generating over £4million a week with 17,000 fans in the audience on any given day.
A film starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan has also been made and will be released on July 11.
